1,167,968. Printing apparatus; damping apparatus. ROLAND OFFSETMASCHINENFABRIK FABER & SCHLEICHER A.G. 31 Aug., 1967 [9 Sept., 1966], No. 39855/67. Heading B6C. A damping device for an offset rotary press having provision for interrupting the supply of moisture to the forme rollers which are engageable with the printing plate comprises an adjustable counting means which counts operational cycles of the press and which permits the engagement of the forme rollers with the plate after a selected number of press cycles after the supply of moisture has started. As shown, Fig. 1, blanket cylinder 3 is journalled in eccentric bearings 7. Current supplied to solenoid 8 " throws-on " the blanket cylinder whilst current supplied to solenoid 9 " throws-off " the cylinder through appropriate rotation of the bearings 7. The damping device 6, Fig. 2, comprises a ductor roller 15 driven by a variable speed electric motor 16. A messenger roller 19 on a shaft 45 carries two two-arm levers 20 each of which supports on one arm an adjustable moisture applying forme roller 21 journalled in eccentric bushes 21. A spring 23 associated with each lever 20 urges the roller 21 into "throw-off" position. To "throw-on" the roller a solenoid 25 is energized. A set screw 26 serves to adjust the maximum pressure with which roller 21 can engage plate cylinder 2. An adjustable counter 31 (not shown) is fed by a switch 13, Fig. 1, operated by a nose 12 rotating with the impression cylinder 4 and after a predetermined number of cycles a visual or audible signal is energized. The roller 21, sufficiently dampened, is then " thrown-on the cylinder 2 either manually or automatically. When the blanket cylinder is " thrown-off " the roller 21 remains in contact with the plate cylinder 2 but supplies a reduced amount of moisture as the speed of the motor 16 is automatically reduced.
