Abstract

1,094,790. Printing apparatus; cleaning blanket cylinders. AGFA-GEVAERT A.G. April 15, 1966 [April 15, 1965], No. 16661/66. Heading B6C. A cylinder in a rotary offset printing machine has tensioned therearound a sheet for cleaning the blanket cylinder the operable arrangement of the machine being such that the cleaning sheet may be brought into contact with the blanket cylinder after the printing operation. In the rotary offset machine shown a swing- ingly mounted blanket cylinder 11 coacts with a combined forme and cleaning cylinder 4. The latter mounts a single sheet comprising a printing portion 7a and a cleaning portion 7b. The operation of the machine is controlled by a lever 31 settable into positions " D," " V," " N " and " R." In the position shown, " V " -pre-inking-the inking and dampening mechanism is tripped " in " by the lever, linkage and cam mechanism which controls the machine. The blanket cylinder 11 is brought into contact with the printing portion 7a of the sheet but not the cleaning portion. The sheet feed mechanism is inoperative. The pre-inking of the blanket is thereby effected. When not required the machine is shut down and the lever 31 is moved into the " night-setting " portion " N " in which both inking and dampening mechanism and the blanket cylinder are tripped " off " the cylinder 4 and the paper feed becomes inoperable. For printing the lever is moved to " D." In this position the blanket is inked by the printing portion 7a then a sheet is fed from the pile 43 between the cylinders 4 and 11 the cleaning portion 7b acting as a pressure backing for the sheet being printed. When the setting lever 31 is moved to the cleaning position " R " the cam 14 rotating with the cylinder 4 causes the blanket to move from the cylinder 4 during passage of the printing portion 7a between the bight and to contact the cylinder 4 during passage of the cleaning portion 7b. The sheet feed is switched out. To assist cleaning, a hand wheel is located at the end of the cylinder 4 by which the machine drive to the cylinder may be interrupted. By rotating the hand wheel it is possible to bring successive parts of the cleaning portion 7b into contact with the blanket cylinder. In a modified apparatus an impression cylinder 64 (Fig. 3, not shown), which may be fitted with a hand wheel in a similar manner to that described above in connection with cylinder 4, contacts the blanket cylinder and carries a cleaning sheet which serves during the printing operation as an underlay. Fig. 4 (not shown) shows a hollow forme cylinder 52 having two rotatable rollers upon which the ends of the combined printing and cleaning sheet are wound. By suitable manipulation of the rollers the cylinder may mount either an entire printing or cleaning surface. In a modification of the cylindrical construction of Fig. 4, the two rollers are eliminated being replaced by a single windable hollow cylinder concentrically housed in the forme cylinder.
