Abstract

1,207,998. Rotary lithographic printing machine. ADDRESSOGRAPH - MULTIGRAPH CORP. 20 Oct., 1967 [20 Oct., 1966], No. 47935/67. Heading B6C. In an automatically operable rotary lithographic printing machine the offset or blanket cylinder is omitted the copy sheet on the impression cylinder 26 coming into direct contact with the master on the plate cylinder 25. The impression and master cylinders are movable from each other and the forme roller 30 which applies both the ink and the moisture to the master cylinder is connected in such manner that it is not lowered to operative position until after means have been effective to sense the presence of a master on the master cylinder. Similarly the master and impression cylinders do not come into contact until a master has been clamped to the master cylinder and pre-inked and a copy sheet clamped to the impression cylinder. Each master is prepared with a suitable treating solution of a chemical nature to accomplish activation of the essential hydrophilic oleophobic background of the master before being fed to the master cylinder. The essential operating characteristics of the machine are shown in Figs. 1A to 1D wherein in the pre-ink phase the master has been clamped to the cylinder 25 and the forme roller 30 has been lowered into contact with the master to apply ink and water for a predetermined number of revolutions. Following this phase a copy sheet is fed to the cylinder 26 which is then raised into contact with the plate cylinder for the printing operation. The machine includes a sensing device to detect the passage of a copy sheet to the cylinder 26. Actuation of this device is a signal for a sequence of events which results in cylinder engagement and vice versa. The copy sheets thus detected are counted and upon satisfaction of the required number the master is ejected from the cylinder 25, the roller 30 is removed to its inoperative position and the cylinders are separated through cam and eccentric mechanism. The plate cylinder 25 carries a rubber underlay and the surface of the impression cylinder is chrome. Automatic means are provided for stripping the masters from the plate cylinder,
