Abstract

1,042,672. Velocity-modulated tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Jan. 17, 1964 [Jan. 18, 1963], No. 2314/63. Heading H1D. The electron beam in a reflex klystron is reflected by means of a magnetic field, which field is preferably substantially radial with respect to the beam axis. The surface of a cathode 1, Fig. 2, is shaped to project an electron beam through an annular aperture 5 into a toroidal cavity resonator 7, the top wall of which is formed by a central magnet polepiece 8 and an annular surrounding polepiece 9 separated by a copper insert 10, and which is coupled to a waveguide 16 by a coaxial feeder 12. The radial magnetic field reflects the electron beam by transforming its upward axial motion first into circular motion around the axis, and subsequently into downward axial motion. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the electron beam passes through both walls of the resonator before being reflected. In a further modification, Fig. 6, the beam is reflected by the radial component of an axially increasing magnetic field provided by the polepieces 41, 50, 51, the middle one serving as the electron gun anode, and the upper one including a waveguide window 53 and dielectric rod 54 for coupling to an output waveguide 16.
