Abstract

1,038,904. Regulating I.C. engines; fuel injection pumps. G. SCHAFER, O. SCHAFER, G. SCHAFER Jun. and U. SCHAFER Jun, [trading as KUGELFISCHER GEORG SCHAFER & CO.] May 1, 1964 [May 8, 1963], No. 18109/64. Headings F1A and F1B. [Also in Division G3] In an I.C. engine device controlling fuel injection as a function of engine speed an engine camshaft driven shaft 9, Fig. 1, acts through cam 29, roller 31, tappet 32, bell-crank 35 and spring-loaded tappet 40 to operate fuel injection pump plunger 3. Bell crank 35 and rocker 27 are eccentrically mounted on shafts 38 and 42 which are pivoted to control the stroke of plunger 3. Engine speed is controlled by governor 13 which acts through sleeve 16, cam 17 and arm 25 to pivot rocker 27. A duct 51, Fig. 2, (not shown) leading from a fuel transfer pump acts on a spring-loaded plunger 47 to move cam 58 axially to rotate arm 43, shaft 42 and the pivot 38 of rocker 27 thus adjusting the plunger stroke in accordance with the speed/delivery performance of the fuel injection pump 2. The cam end 45 acts as an abutment for arm 60 which rotates shaft 38 and the pivot 37 of bell crank 35 to move tappet 40 thus adjusting timing of the fuel injection. The rotational position of cam 58 is effected through pinion 55 and rack 56 by barometric capsules. In a modification the control cam has angularly spaced longitudinal tracks which are moved manually into operation to compensate for the fuel viscosity and density. The loading of governor spring 19 is controlled manually through shaft 22 and arm 21, which carries a pin 23 engaging a groove 24 in spring- abutment 20.
