A unit for the resilient support of a load, having a pair or pairs of resilient plates spaced apart at opposite end locations and adapted to give support to a load at locations intermediate their ends has the second moment of area of the plates between opposite ends thereof varying in a manner adapted to afford substantially constant stresses in the plates due to bending under load. As applied to a furnace chamber 2 the invention comprises membrane tube wall panels 4, 6 and 8 supported by slings 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 and 22 which are mounted upon beams by girders 42 and 44 and units 54, comprising a stack of lozenge-shaped plates spaced in pair by spacers at opposed ends of the major axis of each pair and welded to the upper plate of the pair, Fig. 2 (not shown). A part cylindrical portion of the spacer bears upon the lower plate of the pair, to which are welded locating lugs 74, Fig. 3 (not shown). When used in series pads 61 and locating lugs 76 are centrally welded to the lower plate of each pair and pretensioned bolts 64 are provided, Fig. 2 (not shown). The lowermost plate of a series is provided with pads 62 for support upon beams 50 and 52. Units may be used in groups of two, three or four, the load being applied to the centre of each upper plate by a system of girders. Fig. 9 (not shown), discloses an embodiment wherein pairs of plates are contained by further pairs of plates the major axes of each pair being perpendicular to each other. The plates are supported in a manner similar to that of previous embodiments, the two lowermost plates, 63B and 63C, being supported at their end portions at 58B and 58C.
