Abstract

1,034,110. Shell type construction of marine craft; aircraft framework; railway vehicle bodies. A. T. BELLANCA. Dec. 19, 1962, No. 47999/62. Headings B7A, B7L, B7S and B7W. [Also in Division B5] . A structure (e.g. for marine craft, aircraft components, railway vehicle bodies) comprises an exterior shell containing a plurality of longitudinally and transversely spaced interior shells spaced from the exterior shell, and a rigid lightweight interlayer filling the spaces between the shells and bonding the exterior shell and the interior shells. The shells may be of sheet metal or plastics. The interlayer is a foamed synthetic material formed in situ. In one embodiment the structure is an aircraft float (Figs. 2 and 4, not shown), comprising spaced interior shells 1, 2, 3 in an exterior shell of two sections (4, 5) the spaces being filled with a cellular core 6. In a modification (Fig. 8, not shown) a dorsal bulkhead 7 extends longitudinally of the float and in another modification (Fig. 12, not shown), a pair of dorsal bulkheads 16, 17 extend longitudinally. In another embodiment (Fig. 19, not shown), the structure is a speed boat comprising an external shell formed of upper and lower sections 28, 36 and internal shells 31, 32, 33, 34, 35.
