Abstract

A sheet of material 11 see Fig. 1 (not shown), e.g. of paper, cloth, plastic film or plywood has a coating composition applied thereto which is convertible into a plastic foam, the thickness of the coating being regulated by an air doctor 19. The coating composition may comprise either a plastic froth or a reactive mixture adapted to transform into a plastic foam. The air doctor may, as shown in Fig. 2 (not shown) comprise a bin-shaped chamber having a porous plate in its lower surface or it may comprise a single slit nozzle (Fig. 3 not shown) or a number of individual jet-like nozzles (Figs. 4 and 5 not shown) set transversely of and in the opposite direction to the movement of sheet 11. A monitoring device may regulate the supply to the composition applicator 24 while the air doctor acts as a fine control on the thickness of the layer. The mound 26 of coating composition built up by the air doctor acting as a reservoir.ALSO:A sheet of material 11, see Fig. 1 not shown, e.g. of paper, cloth, plastic film or plywood has a coating composition applied thereto which is convertible into a plastic foam, the thickness of the coating being regulated by an air doctor 19. The air doctor may, as shown, comprise a box-shaped chamber having a porous plate in its lower surface or it may comprise a single slit nozzle or a number of individual jet-like nozzles set transversly of and in the opposite direction to the movement of the sheet 11. A monitoring device may regulate the supply to the composition applicator 24 white the air doctor acts as a fine control on the thickness of the layer, the mound 26 of coating composition built up by the air doctor acting as a reservoir.
