[Class 100 (ii)] Inking - mechanism.-Ink is applied to the distributing-cylinder 12, Fig. 1, through narrow orifices in a bar 9 arranged between the cylinder and a series of large nozzles in a casing 6 which is supplied with excess ink by a single pump. In one form, Fig. 2, the bar is of porous material such as felt. The ink is drawn from a reservoir 4, Fig. 1, by a pump 1 and forced through pipe 5 to a chamber 7, Fig. 2, in the casing 6, the chamber 7 communicating with the back of the bar 9 by a series of large nozzles 8 each provided with a screw valve 19 for adjusting or cutting off the supply. Excess ink returns to the reservoir through a pipe 17 containing a pressure regulating valve 18 and a pressure meter 32. The casing 6 is carried by arms 20 free upon a shaft 21 and is pressed towards the cylinder 12 by adjustable springs 29 carried by arms 23 fixed to the shaft 21 and bearing against lugs 22 on the arms 20. The shaft 21 may be turned by worm gear 24, 26 to move the bar 9 clear of the cylinder when desired and to return it to its initial position determined by the engagement of an arm 27 on the shaft with an adjustable stop 28. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4, the bar 33 is made of bronze, vulcanized fibre, indiarubber or other hard material provided with slots or perforations 34 for the passage of the ink. These perforations are arranged close to the edge of the bar which is first engaged by the cylinder 12 as it rotates, the unperforated portion of the bar serving to distribute the ink. To provide for a uniform flow of ink through all the perforations, the back of the bar 33 is formed with a separate chamber 36 for each nozzle 8, the length of the perforations decreasing with increasing distance from the nozzle as shown, or their cross section increasing with their distance from the nozzle.
