Abstract

983,622. Delivering measured quantities of liquid. PAPER CONVERTING MACHINE CO. Inc. Feb. 27, 1961 [Feb. 26, 1960], No. 7091/61. Heading B8N. [Also in Division D1] An apparatus 23 for delivering a predetermined quantity of liquid adhesive under pressure from a nozzle 28 to a moving paper web operates as follows:-adhesive under pressure is delivered from a manifold 25 forming part of a liquid circuit which includes a pump, via passages 43, 41, 40 to a chamber 39 from which it passes via lateral bores 47 and axial bore 48 to the chamber 37 to exert pressure on the diaphragm 61 and so close the passage 75 between the bores 63, 70. Adhesive is prevented from reaching a bore 53 by a floating valve 49 which is forced by the adhesive against a seat 52. On operation of a solenoidoperated valve in the delivery line to the manifold 25 by an automatically operating electric circuit, the adhesive pressure on the valve 49 and on the diaphragm 61 is cut off and air pressure forces the diaphragm 61 to the right, whereby passages 75 and 53 are opened to air and adhesive, respectively. Thus air passes via bores 69, 68, 63, 70 . . . 72 to the nozzle 28 and draws a predetermined quantity of adhesive up the bore 53 for ejection through the nozzle 28, the valve 49 being forced into contact with a seat 48 to cut off the predetermined amount of adhesive in the chamber 37 from the source. A plurality of apparatus 23 may be arranged side-by-side, for applying adhesive periodically to a longitudinally slit moving paper web. Specifications 793,490 and 825,724 are referred to.
