Abstract

1,182,773. Coating apparatus. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. 21 April, 1967 [23 April, 1966; 27 May, 1966], Nos. 17861/66 and 23861/66. Heading B2L. [Also in Division A3] An adhesive applying device, e.g. for use in a shoe lasting machine, includes inlet means for feeding a metered quantity of molten thermoplastic adhesive into a chamber and means for ejecting the adhesive through a nozzle. In a first embodiment (Figs. 2, 4) with the device out of contact with the workpiece a spring 80 lowers a piston 70 so that an upper portion 70b of the piston 70 blocks a bore 58. Molten thermoplastic adhesive is then fed from an inlet 138 through passages 141, 150, along bores 146, 130, around an annular passage 61 and along a bore 90 to move a metering plug 100. The adhesive supply is then cut off by a valve 144 operated by piston and cylinder 124. The adhesive is maintained in molten condition by a heater 134. When the device is contacted by the workpiece the piston 70 is raised to the position shown in Fig. 2. Piston and cylinder 102 is then operated so that the piston rod 112 strikes the metering plug to force the adhesive along the bore 58 and eject it from the outlet ports 26 onto the workpiece. In a second embodiment (Fig. 5) a piston and cylinder 307 raises a spool valve 311 for a predetermined length of time so that a metered quantity of adhesive is fed from an inlet 337 through passages 343 into a bore 345 in the valve 311. The adhesive is maintained in molten condition by a heater 357. A valve (not shown) is then operated to feed compressed air from an inlet 359 through passages 363 into the bore 345 so that the adhesive is ejected through outlet ports 333.
