Abstract

739,943. Injection-moulding machines. EYNARD, E. Feb. 23, 1954 [June 2, 1953], No. 5290/54. Class 87 (2). A tubular piston or sleeve 10, disposed between the injection piston 12 and the injection cylinder 1, is freely slidable in the cylinder between the right-hand position shown in Fig. 1 and the left-hand position shown in Fig. 3. The sleeve always communicates with the feed inlet la of the cylinder by means of a slot 10c in the sleeve. Operation:- (1)The mould 7 having been closed, Fig. 1, and having pushed open a normallyclosed valve 6 in the nozzle 5, the injection piston 12 moves to the left. The material A in the sleeve, which is solid or semi-solid, is compressed by the piston into a compact mass that adheres to the sleeve, and the sleeve is thus moved to the left by the piston. The plastified material B in the cylinder 1 is thus forced by the sleeve into the mould, the sleeve being halted by abutment with the torpedo 8, the latter having a recess 8a into which enters a pointed nose 10a on the sleeve. Apertures 10b are formed in the forward end of the sleeve. (2) The mould opens, valve 6 closes, and piston 12 recedes to the right, Fig. 3, leaving an empty space C in the sleeve. Into this space falls fresh material from the hopper 9. (3) Piston 12 again advances to the left from the Fig. 3 position, forcing material through the poles 10b, and since valve 6 is closed the sleeve is forced back to the Fig. 1 position, being stopped by a screwed ring 11. (4) Piston 12 retracts to the right, more fresh material falls into the sleeve, and the position is as shown in Fig. 1. The cycle is then repeated. Thus for each injection into the mould two lots of material are fed from the hopper. In modifications (not illustrated in the Specification) (a) the head 10a of the sleeve may be omitted; (b) the forward stroke of the sleeve may be limited by means other than the torpedo; and (c) the valve 6 may be omitted, the mould itself preventing discharge when it has been filled.
