Abstract
1501747 Injection moulding integral skin foam articles SCHLOEMANN-SIEMAG AG 16 Oct 1975 [19 Oct 1974] 42424/75 Heading B5A Integral skin foam articles are injection moulded by injecting unfoamed material containing blowing agent into a closed mould to fill the mould cavity, causing or allowing an unfoamed skin to form, transferring a portion of the material within the skin to a storage chamber to thereby allow the transferred material and the remaining core material to foam, compacting the transferred material in the storage chamber, and in the next cycle injecting the compacted material with a further charge of unfoamed material so that the compacted material is completely encased by the fresh material. Plasticized material is fed past a non-return valve 3 into an injection cylinder 1 from which it is injected by a ram 4 through an outer nozzle 12. A control member 11 in the nozzle 12 contains a sleeve 14 which is slidable to close the nozzle after injection by means of cylinder 16 acting through a transverse slide 15. A cranked rod 18 is moved within the slide 15 by a cylinder 19 to retract a closure needle 17 within the sleeve 14 after formation of the skin to allow material to flow out through the sleeve into storage chamber 24. A piston 25 is displaced by the incoming material against a fluid pressure in a second chamber 28. After closing the sleeve 14 the piston 25 is used to compact the material in the chamber 24 ready for injection simultaneously with the material from cylinder 1 in the next cycle, the sleeve 14 acting as an inner nozzle to confine the compacted material within the fresh material. Alternatively the compacted material may be injected between two injection stages of the fresh material. In another embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) an injection cylinder (1a) and a storage cylinder (23a) are arranged in parallel on either side of the nozzle axis, and the end of the sleeve is connected directly to a coaxial operating cylinder (16a).
