962,163. Coating apparatus. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. Sept. 2, 1960 [Sept. 4, 1959 ; Sept. 21, 1959], No. 30276/60. Heading B2B. [Also in Division Fl] Apparatus for applying thermoplastic cement supplied in the form of a rod R comprises a device 20 including a heated casing 26 provided with a recess 32, and a passageway 30 through which the rod of cement is fed by a feeding mechanism 72 under the control of a device 98; together with a cement extruding gun 200, comprising a body portion, and a nozzle 210 having a cylindrical bore terminating in a discharge orifice, a plunger movable in the bore being linked to a control member 262, having a finger-engaging portion 264 by operating which cement can be extruded from the gun. When the gun requires refilling, its nozzle is inserted in the recess 32 and the control member 268 engages a control lever 99 which closes a switch 100 and causes a power source, not shown, to drive the feed wheels 71 and 73, feeding the rod of cement R into the passageway 30, where it is progressively melted and fed into the recess 32 and into the bore in the nozzle of the gun. This moves the plunger away from the discharge orifice and causes the control member 268 to disengage from the control lever 99 when the bore is filled, thus terminating feeding of the rod of cement.
