Abstract

A method of applying a coating material to a web, e.g. of paper or textile, comprises drawing the web over and above the surface of a pond of the coating material so that the <FORM:0921418/IV(a)/1> web takes up material therefrom, drawing the web over a doctor blade 18 which defines the side of the pond, and controlling the thickness and/or smoothness of the coating by varying the pressure the web exerts on the blade 18, e.g. by means of an adjustable fluid (air) nozzle 9. Coating material is delivered continuously to a container 1 which may have a heating or cooling tube 3. One or more holes or slots 2 communicate via a passage 30 and an opening 32 with the pond, which overlies a flat member 28. Material bleeds from the pond through an orifice 33a and over the top of an adjustable plate 35 to a trough 23a. The edges of the web are supported by shelf portions 41 of a guide member 39 which is slidable over the member 28. The portions 41 prevent the coating of the edges of the web, which may be held down by a suction device positioned before the coating apparatus, see Fig. 1 (not shown). A constriction X in the passage 30 prevents dirt &c. reaching the pond. The container 1 is angularly adjustable in rings 38. It is stated that the nozzle 9 may be omitted, control of the web tension being achieved by directing the web downwardly on emerging from the coating apparatus. The blade 18 preferably has a rounded edge 21 facing the oncoming web, and has a square edge at the opposite side.
