Humidification of absorbent sheet material is carried out in a rotary drum 1, the material being held against the interior of the drum and sprayed with water through a row of nozzles 13 from a pipe 12. A measured quantity of water may be supplied to control the humidity and forced out of a tank 16 by air from a compressor 17. Alternatively a time switch may control the time of operation of motor 11 driving the drum.
