UNITED STATES PATENT CFFICE.
CHARLES ND, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., AND JosEPH G. ROWLAND, or
QUINCY, ILLINOIS.-
IMPROVEMENT IN COPYING-PRESS PADS.
.Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,029, dated May 11, 1825; application dated November 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GHARLEs ROWLAND, of New York city, New York, and J OSEPH G. ROWLAND, of Quincy, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bibulous Material, of which the following is a specifieation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to a material, preferably paper, having one surface bibulous or absorbent and the opposite side non-absorbent, the material to be used for blotting and presscopying and analogous purposes.
The accompanying drawing represents aside or sectional view of an illustration of the invention, A being the coating and B the bibulous or absorbent material.
Preferably the invention is constructed by applying to one side of a sheet of blotting-paper a coating of asphaltnm or other varnish or material, that, while rendering the surface to which it is applied non-absorbent, shall not so permeate the paper as to render the opposite side non-bibulous or non-absorbent. Other bibulous material may be substituted for paper and similarly prepared. The best article for coating the back of the paper of which we are now aware is asphaltum varnish, with the edges stiflened or rigidified by means of shellac varnish or by pressure, which will condense the paper and render it more rigid on said The varnish should be gently applied with a brush, or may be by means of a roller, in such manner as that, while it will thoroughly coat the paper with said varnish, rendering it at the same time entirely water-proof, it will only form a thin skin or coating over it, thus allowing the chief portion of the stock of the pad to possess the absorbent quality.
The invention will be found especially useful in copying-presses and for blotters, as it renders the paper tougher, and does only in the slightest degree affect its entire absorbent qualities, either for water or ink.
Litharge may be mixed with the varnish to prevent its saturating the bibulous material to too great an extent. When thus used the. coating forms a thick skin upon the surface, to which the varnish and litharge are applied, the latter serving to dry the varnish before it has penetrated too far.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A bibulous paper for blotting and copying purposes, coated on one side with asphalturn varnish, substantially as set forth.
2. A bibulous paper for blotting and copying purposes, coated on one side with asphaltum varnish and litharge, substantially'as specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing improvements in bibulous material, as above described, we have hereunto set our hands and seals this 23d day of November, 1874.
