Abstract

1416944 Process for preparing moistened sanitary etc, material PFIZER INC 21 Sept 1973 [13 Nov 1972] 44508/73 Heading ASR [Also in Divisions A4 and B8] A process for preparing pre-moistened antimicrobial material comprises the steps of coating paper or fabric sheet 2 in strip form with a solution 8 of antimicrobial agent in a volatile carrier; permitting said carrier to evaporate; transversely perforating said coated sheet into separable material sections; longitudinally and transversely folding said perforated sheet; arranging said folded and perforated sheet in stack form in a moisture-impervious container; moistening said stack with aqueous liquid; and enclosing said moistened stack with a moistureimpervious cover seal on said container. The coating step is effected by a gravure roller. The fabric, e.g. non-woven hemp, or paper strip 2 is drawn past pressure roll 4 in rolling contact with cylinder 6, a precision engraved applicator suitable for gravure printing, the surface being etched with a uniform pattern (14), Fig. 2, (not shown) which holds the antimicrobial solution 8, the pattern determining the quantity of solution transferred to strip 2 in the coating application. The roll 4, having a resilient rubber surface, and the cylinder 6 rotated in the directions shown, cylinder 6 being partially immersed in the antimicrobial solution 8 contained in a reservoir 10. Excess solution is removed by a blade 12. The antimicrobial agent is a quaternary ammonium compound e.g. benzalkonium chloride and the volatile carrier is water, a water-ethanol or a water-isopropanol mixture. After drying, the treated material is transversely perforated i.e. either a line of transverse slits defined by residual fibre bonds, or a transverse row of holes is introduced, and longitudinally and transversely folded so that the material can be packed in stack form. The stacks are placed in moisture impervious containers and moistened with an aqueous liquid e.g. water, waterethanol or water-isophopanol. The folding is effected by means of a conventional zig-zag folding machine.
