Abstract

[Also in Division B8] An attachment for a fork lift truck for use in handling heavy articles such as press dies 36 comprises a base 19 provided with channel members 20 for receiving the forks 18 of the lift truck and with a turntable 22 supporting a roller table 23. The roller table comprises two rows of rollers 24 between which is formed a channel 25 containing an hydraulic ram. The cylinder of the ram is secured at one end of the channel and the piston-rod 28 is provided with a T-shaped pusher 29 for pushing the die off the rollers. Channels 35 are provided in the roller table for the reception of the forks 18a so that the die 36 can be lifted by a fork lift truck while the attachment is on a stand 37 and lowered on to the rollers 24. The forks are then withdrawn and inserted into the channel members 20. In operation, to remove the die from a press bed, the lift truck lowers the roller table until a pin 39 in an eye member 38 on the roller table engages an eye bolt 40 on the press bed 41. A hook 47a on a chain provided with dogs 48 is engaged with an eye bolt 42 on the die and one of the dogs is engaged in a slot 49 in the pusher 29 which is then moved to the right by extending the ram. The dog is then disengaged from the pusher 29 which is returned to the left-hand position, a further dog is engaged in the slot 49 and the cycle is repeated until the die is clear of the press bed and rests on the rollers 24. The die is transferred from the rollers 24 to a press bed by pushing the die to the left by means of the ram and pusher 29, extending the ram, inserting a packing piece between the pusher and the die, repeating the cycle until the die is on the press bed. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the table is provided with four rows of rollers. The attachment may alternatively be mounted on a fork lift device suspended from an overhead trolley.
