Abstract

1404833 Strapping articles SIGNODE CORP 26 July 1972 [18 Oct 1971] 35031/72 Heading B8C Apparatus for strapping a fibrous bale B or other article at longitudinally spaced locations comprises strap guiding sections 64, 66 at each location, and a carriage 40 movable between the locations and carrying a strapping head 32 and further strap guiding sections 68, 70. The carriage comprises a horizontal beam 48 and two legs 50, 52 which straddle the press forme of the bale B. The carriage has wheels 45, 46, and 62 running on tracks 42 and may be driven by an air cylinder 80, the piston of which is connected to two cable sections, each section passing around a sheave 90, (94) at a respective end of the run of the carriage and is connected to the carriage. Alternatively the carriage may be driven by a stalling fluid motor, an electric torque motor, a slip clutch, or by spring means. Each strapping location has a retractable stop pin which engages roller 122 on a plunger on the carriage to stop the carriage. The plunger is momentarily retracted after the strapping is completed. At the end of the travel of the carraige cam rollers 182 engage cam tracks on frame 10 to push the strapping head 32 and guide sections 68, 70 outwardly against the bias of springs 172 so that they may move past the frame 10 to permit removal of the bale.
