Apparatus for compacting and banding a coil of wire 10 suspended from a carrier with the longitudinal axis of the coil extending horizontally comprises a pair of fixtures 36 and 38, Fig. 4, mounted for linear movement relative to each other in a direction longitudinally of the coil axis, pressure cylinder assemblies 46 and 48 for moving the fixtures 36 and 38 between a clearance position relative to the carrier and an operative position relative to the coil 10; locking lugs 66 and 79 locating notches 94 and 95 for aligning the carrier with the fixtures; a plurality of pressure pads 90 mounted on the fixture 36 for engagement with circumferentially spaced areas on one end face of the coil, and pressure cylinder assemblies 92 for moving the pressure pads longitudinally of the coil axis towards the other fixture 38 to compact the coil between the pressure pads 90 and other fixture 38 in condition for the application of bands to the coil. In operation the fixtures 36 and 38 are moved together by actuation of the cylinders 46 and 48 and the mandrel 56 is extended by actuation of the cylinders 58 and 59. The extent of these movements is regulated in accordance with the width of the coil 10 being handled so that the coil is engaged between the face plate of the banding fixture 38 and the prsesure pads 90 of the compacting fixture 36. The locking means are engaged by placing lugs 79 into overlapping relation with a pair of the locking elements 66 of the mandrel 56 by actuation of cylinder 82, Fig. 5, which rotates collar 78. Cradling bar 96 is raised by the actuating cylinders 98 and 101 to partially support the weight of the coil from below. The coil is thus compacted by energizing the actuating cylinders 92 of the pressure pads 90 and the banding heads 72 are operated while pressure is still applied to the coil by the pads 90. On completion of the banding operation the pressure pads 90 are retracted, the cradling bars 96 lowered, the locking elements are released by rotation of collar 78 and the carriages 40 and 42 returned to their clearance positions.
