Abstract

1,224,569. Winding webs. MACHINEFABRIEK " OOST-GRONINGEN " N.V. 17 May, 1968 [17 May, 1967], No. 23720/68. Heading B8R. In web winding apparatus wherein a feed belt 4 drives the periphery of a roll being wound, the web is attached to a core by stapling devices 24 extending through openings along the belt and partly wound at a first station, whereupon the partly wound roll is moved by the bond 4 to a second station and the winding completed while the core is under a compressive load. Inserting cores.-A core magazine comprises two spaced members 6 of U-shaped cross-section. The ends of the cores (8, Fig. 3) are provided with taps 9 extending into U-sections of the members 6. To enable the cores to be dropped one at a time on to the feed belt 4, the lower end of each member 6 is provided with a passage mechanism (10) comprising a pneumatic cylinder (11), a T-shaped rocker (12) and a pair of pins (13) which are moved alternately into and out of the path through which the taps (9) must fall. Each member 6 carries a plate 14 on which is mounted a pneumatic cylinder 15. Formed integrally with the piston is a carrier 16 for three rotatable discs 17, between which the taps 9 are received. Both carriers 16 are lowered to retain a core at the first winding station, when the core is moved by the belt 4 from the magazine to a stop carrying a switch 25. Attaching the web to the core.-Under the bond 4 is a cross-bar 18 carried by a pair of pivoted arms 19. The arms 19 are moved upwardly by a wedge-shaped cam 21, mounted on the piston rod of a pneumatic cylinder 20 and co-operating with a cam follower roller 22. The cross-bar 18 carries a plurality of pneumatic staplers 23, whose stapling heads 24 extend between the spaces (5, Fig. 2) between the plurality of bonds constituting the belt 4. Winding commences when the leading end of the web, detected by a photo-cell, is stapled to the core. As the roll diameter increases, the carriers 16 are moved upwards and eventually operate a pressure switch 27. The carriers 16 are then raised by the cylinders 15 so that the roll formed is free to move along with the belt 4 to the second winding station. Hold down wires or bands (not illustrated) for the roll are provided between the winding stations at a suitable height above the belt 4 for travel at the same velocity as that of the belt 4. Winding and removal of web-roll.-At the second winding station, two spaced guide members 34 are pivotally mounted on a shaft 33 journalled to the upper ends of members 6. The guide members 34 are locked in a vertical position by pneumatic cylinder-operated pawls 36. An extended flange 46 at the lower end of each guide member 34, constitutes an abutment for retaining the tops 9 of the cores. When a partly wound roll reaches the second winding station, a switch 47 located on the abutment 46 is actuated, whereby pneumatic cylinderoperated pawls 49 release carriages 39, so that they move down the guide members 34 to press down the tops 9 of the core. When the required diameter of roll is achieved, pawls 36 are released allowing the guide members 34 to swing outwards due to the feed of the belt 4. In this manner, the completed web-roll is discharged from the machine. Pneumatic cylinderoperated pins 52 engage the chains 40 connected to the carriages 39 so that they do not follow the discharging web-roll. Each side of the apparatus is slidably mounted on a number of cross-shafts 7, so that adjustments are possible for webs of various widths.
