Abstract

1,071,925. Feeding webs. FMC CORPORATION. Dec. 28, 1964 [March 17, 1964], No. 52531/64. Heading B6B. [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for rewinding a web on to a core to form a roll or log, comprises a carrier 18, Fig. 5, for receiving a core and carrying it to successive stations, namely (a) a first station S, at which the core C is fed to the carrier, (b) a second station T where the core is taken off to a web-winding apparatus, (c) a third station U where the core with the completed roll L thereon is again received by the carrier, and (d) a fourth station R where the log comprised by the core and roll is removed from the carrier. The carrier 18 comprises a shaft 224 moved anti-clockwise intermittently in steps of 90 degrees, arms 268 fixed to the shaft and each carrying a jaw 272, and arms 276 pivoted to the arms 268 and each carrying a jaw 274 for co-operation with a corresponding jaw 272 to grip a completed log L over one part of their path and to support loose shafts 314 on which the cores C have been placed as described below over another part of their path. The arms 276 are spring-pressed towards the arms 264 to an extent limited by stops 304 and have rollers 282 which engage fixed bars 262 and a surface 260 to move the arms as now described. At station S, the jaw 274 supports a shaft 314 in line with a conveyer F, Fig. 2, which feeds a core C endwise on to the shaft 314. A camoperated roller 430 situated along the length of the shaft assists the feeding. During the next indexing movement of the carrier 18, the jaw 274 moves the shaft and core along a guide channel 242 to station T, where chucks on endless chains 320, Fig. 5, engage the shaft 314 and carry the shaft and core to a webrewinding mechanism constructed as described in Specification 891,315. The shaft with the core and completed roll are carried by the chains to station U where the jaws 272, 274 are operated to grip the log L. The log is then carried from station U to station R and the jaws are opened to deposit the log on a support 308 whereupon a pusher 400 carried by an endless chain 388 moves the log, including the core, endwise off the shaft on to a conveyer G, Fig. 2. The jaw 274 is now moved anti-clockwise Fig. 5, to engage the empty shaft 314, now supported by a cam-raised surface 407, to move the shaft along the guide channel 242 to station S, whereupon the sequence of operations is repeated. As the shaft 314 leaves station R it engages two wires (372, Fig. 4) of a switch (SW1) thus closing a circuit of an electromagnet 90, Fig. 2, controlling the feeding of cores C from a bin 10. If, however, due to a fault in the web winder, the shaft 314 arrives at station R with a core thereon but no roll, the core engages the wires 372 and the circuit is not closed so that no core is fed from the bin. A second pair of wires (372) in the circuit of a switch (SW2) is provided at station S and close the circuit if a core is not properly fed on to the shaft, so that the machine is stopped. The jaws 272, 274 are situated some distance axially from that end of the carrier 18 from which the completed logs are discharged on to the conveyer G, and to support the other ends of the shafts 314, arms (326, Fig. 4) with seatings (328) for the shafts are fixed to the carrier shaft 224. A fixed guide surface (342) holds the shafts in the seatings 328 and has a removable part (358) to allow of insertion or removal of shafts 314. A log L is conveyed axially by the conveyer G until its leading end abuts against a stop 154, Fig. 2, where it closes a microswitch to operate a valve admitting pressure fluid to a cylinder 156. The cylinder 156 causes arms 170 to push the log on to a delivery conveyer H which, together with the conveyer G, is driven continuously by a separate motor 184. The cores C pass from the bin 10 one by one along a guideway 78, 88 (see Division B8), closed at its lower end by a plate 102 which is oscillated by the electromagnet 90, energized as already described in synchronism with the movement of the carrier 18, so as to allow a core to drop on to the conveyer F which feeds it endwise to station S.
