1,048,748. Bundling coils of wire; masted lift trucks. MORGAN CONSTRUCTION CO. Oct. 14, 1964 [Oct. 14, 1963], No. 41887/64. Headings B8C and B8H. Resilient annular articles, e.g. coils of wire are supported on means connected to a movable compacting head and are compacted into an axially aligned bundle between the movable head and a fixed contacting head, there being aligning and interlocking means for locking the support means to the fixed head, and compacting means associated with the interlocking means for drawing the movable head towards the fixed for compacting the annular articles and strap guide means co-operating with both fixed and movable heads for facilitating strapping the compacted articles into a single bundle. The movable compacting head 10 and supporting means in the form of a cantilever 16 with a locking shoulder 64 are hooked on to the lifting carriage 11 of a truck 12, while the fixed compacting head 38 is secured to a housing 20 held on a floor base-plate 24. Mounted within the housing 20 is a hydraulic cylinder 40 with a compacting sleeve 50 having locking teeth 62a-62e and being reciprocatable horizontally. In operation the truck is driven between rails 22 and the cantilever 16 loaded, e.g. with wire coils 18 is guided by a receiving channel (not shown) into alignment with its locking shoulder 64 positioned for engagement with one of the locking teeth 62. The lifting carriage 11 is then lowered to bring the cantilever 16 and sleeve 50 into contact and the truck 12 allowed to reverse under the resiliency of the coils being slightly compacted by the motion of the truck towards the fixed head 38 until locking shoulder 64 engages one of the locking teeth (62e, as shown): the hydraulic cylinder 40 is operated and the sleeve 50 moved to draw the truck towards the housing 20 and compress the coils 18. Four hydraulic cylinder elements 72 (Fig. 8, not shown) are associated with sliding strap tracks 84 and are extendable to position the tracks within the coils where they co-operate with passageways 90 on the fixed compacting head 38 and similar passageways 94 on the movable head 10 so that straps can be manually inserted along the so-formed continuous guide paths and their ends fastened together. The hydraulically acting members 16, 50 are then released and the compacted bundle of coils removed by the truck.
