Abstract

[Also in Division E1] Apparatus for handling an elongated objectfor example raising and then dropping a pole, pile or spud-comprises a ring 11 adapted to encircle the object, a plurality of gripping members 14 hingedly connected to the ring, and means to move the members to grip the object. The members are moved inwardly by a lower ring 12 being raised by cables 41 and causing adjustably mounted cam followers 27 to act against cam races on the backs of the members. The ring 12 slides on rods 34 connected to the ring 11. Movement of the ring 12 with respect to the ring 11 is limited by stops 39 on the rods 34 and by stops 69 on rods 46 connected to the cables 41. Each rod 46 is connected to a piston 64 in a cylinder connected to the ring 12. On release of the pressure in the cylinder, the cylinder and ring 12 are able to fall downwardly with respect to the piston and ring 11, thus releasing the object being gripped, with the lifting force being then applied directly to the ring 11.
