Abstract

Polyacrylonitrile and its copolymers are dyed using a thickened acid aqueous solution containing a basic dye and as assistant a mixture of polyglycol ethers of fatty alcohols or polyglycol esters of fatty acids having 8-14 C atoms, which polyglycol ethers or esters have 4-12 ether oxygen groups and/or amides of saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acids having 8-14 C atoms which amides are derived from primary or secondary amines containing at least one low hydroxyalkyl group having 2-4 carbon atoms the aqueous acid solution also containing a soluble salt of a saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid having 8-14 carbon atoms. The thickened solution is applied at a temperature below the drawing temperature of the basic dye and the dye is fixed by steaming. Preferably a continuous dyeing method is used any conventional dyeing assistant may also be used in the process.
