Abstract

[Also in Divisions E1 and F2] A jack for post-tensioning a stranded, concrete reinforcing, cable comprises a hollow cylindrical body 101 into which fluid is pumped at 103, forcing an internal piston 102 and a threaded sleeve 104 therethrough. When the desired tension is reached, a nut 107 is tightened up on the sleeve 104, and slotted washers 106 are inserted between an anchorage shell 9, formed around a protuberance 7 on the cable, and an end-plate 34. The cable is gripped by semi-cyclindrical shells 91 and 92, presenting a tapering exterior to the sleeve 104. An alternative form of jack is illustrated in Fig. 1 (not shown), said jack comprising two open-ended cylinders 12 and 13 connected to a cross-bar 18, fluid being injected at 14 and 15 between the cylinder walls and pistons 16 and 17 contained thereby, to force the cross-bar outwardly. The cross-bar engages a shell 8 around a second protuberance 6 on the cable, thereby tensioning the cable, and rods and blocks 24, 24a and 25 are inserted between the cross-bar and the concrete end face.
