Abstract

1,026,973. Delivering measured quantities of liquid. NOVIMA A.G. Feb. 1, 1963 [Nov. 12, 1962], No. 4188/63. Heading B8N. [Also in Division B1] An apparatus for dispensing measured quantities of liquid, such as a liquefied gas, comprises one or more measuring chambers 13, in each of which a floating piston 14 is reciprocated by alternately admitting the liquid to one side and then to the other side of the piston, wherein in each delivery conduit 11, 12 from the or each cylinder a back-pressure device 25 is provided, whereby the piston is subjected to a back pressure on its delivery side sufficient to prevent evaporation of the liquid in the cylinder. The ends of the measuring chamber 13 are connected by conduits 9, 10 to a slide valve 7 which, via an inlet pipe 6, is connected to the output side of a pump 3, the latter drawing liquid from a container 1. The slide valve 7 is provided with a control piston 8 which is actuated by means of compressed air, in a cylinder 15, under the control of valves 18 in the measuring chambers. In operation, with the apparatus in the position shown, the pump 3 feeds liquid through the pipe 6, valve 7, conduit 9, into one end of the chamber 13, thereby moving the piston so that the liquid on the other side thereof is forced through conduit 10, valve 7, pipe 12, backpressure device 25, non-return valve 26, pipe 27, into a container 29, the latter being held in contact with a filling head 28 by a compressedair operated piston 33. At the end of the stroke of the piston 14, the latter actuates one of the valves 18 so that, after an empty container 19 is connected to the filling head and a manually-actuated valve 17 momentarily operated, compressed air is fed to one end of the slide valve 7, thereby reversing its position shown and thus permitting liquid to flow through pipe 6, valve 7, conduit 10 to act on the opposite side of the piston 14; the liquid is then dispensed into the container via conduit 9, valve 7, pipe 11, back-pressure device 25 and non-return valve 26. The back-pressure devices 25 are either fixed or variable throttle or pressure relief valves. An adjustable stop 19 is provided for varying the travel of the free piston. In a modification, two sets of identical apparatus are coupled together so as to feed measured quantities of different liquids into the container via a mixing device (see Division B1).
