Abstract
A method of forming a cavity in a metal article comprises causing a relative rotational movement to occur between an electrode 10 having substantially the same shape as the cavity to be formed and the metal article whereby the electrode is caused to approach and engage the metal article, an electric potential <PICT:1024699/C6-C7/1> being applied between the electrode and work piece, which are separated by an electrolyte so that metal is electrolytically removed from the work piece as the electrode moves progressively into said work piece to form a cavity. After producing the cavity the electrode is preferably partly withdrawn from the metal article and the current density reduced for a predetermined time prior to complete removal of the electrode from the article. In the embodiment shown the electrode 10 is mounted on a bar 16 which is pivoted about, but off-set from a driving shaft 13 which is connected to an electric motor 12 via a reduction gear box 14 (Fig. 1, not shown). The electrode, which with the workpiece is mounted within a gas tight cell 15, is formed with a plurality of internal passages 20, 25 and 26 through which electrolyte is supplied from a tank 21 via a filter 22, pump 23 (Fig. 1, not shown) and hose 24. Spent electrolyte is returned to the tank 21. A current of air is passed through the cell 15 to remove hydrogen formed therein. After withdrawing the electrode from one cavity 30 it is re-positioned ready to start forming the next nozzle.
