Abstract

241,413. Spõth, C. Dec. 10, 1924. Nitric acid. - Water or other liquid which yields hydrogen and oxygen when dissociated is introduced into the electric arc in the fixation of nitrogen from air by means of an electric discharge. The apparatus shown in the Figure is enclosed in a casing 1 into which electrodes 2, 3 extend. The electrode 3 is hollow and the liquid is introduced into it through a supply pipe 4. Within the electrode is a metal pin-valve 5 which by rotation of a screw 6 enables the flow of water 6 to be controlled. Water in a vessel 8 fulfils the double purpose of cooling the electrode 2 and also the walls of the casing 1, the cooling water being supplied through pipe 10,.passing through outlets 9 and down the walls of the casing and finally being withdrawn as nitric acid at 12. Air is admitted to the furnace through holes 11. Dilute aqueous solutions of salts or acids and alcohol are examples of liquids which may be injected into the arc instead of water. Copper, cadmium and alloys thereof when used for the electrodes act as catalysts in the fixation process.
