Abstract
1,023,944. Separating liquid particles from gases. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Sept.18, 1962 [Sept. 18, 1961], No. 35570/62. Heading BIT. [Also in Divisions B5, Dl and F4] A method of treating textile yarn previously treated with lubricant or other liquid comprises feeding the yarn through a jet under the influence of high velocity air or other gas which tends to strip the liquid from the yarn to form a fine mist, confining the mist-laden atmosphere in the vicinity of the jet and causing it to impinge on a direction-changing and condensing surface. The gas jet can entangle the filaments of the yarn and/or bulk the yarn, or alternatively be used to remove excess liquid from a yarn emerging from a coagulating bath -such as used in wet spinning-or from a washing, hotwater drafting, dyeing, or sizing step. As shown, the condensing surface 23 comprises the removable top of a housing 10. The yarn, possibly direct from dry or wet spinning, or from a lubricating step, Fig. 1 (not shown), is first threaded through the ceramic eyelets 17, 18 of a jet 9 and over ceramic guides 11, 12 on the housing 10, and then the top 23 weighed at 24 is placed on the jet with the yarn passing through slitted ceramic eyelets 25. The liquid which condenses on the surface 23 drains away through a pipe 22, while gas from the jet 9 and air drawn in through gaps 32 in the housing are removed through a conduit 20 to a low section exhaust system, or into the room environment via possibly air filters. Alternatively the side walls, which are either curved or comprise a series of plane segments, of the housing 10 may act as the condensing surface, with the gas jet removable upwards into a threading position.
