Abstract

1,023,312. Hydraulic jet propulsion; amphibious vehicles. DOWTY TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. May 1, 1963 [May 9, 1962; June 2, 1962], Nos. 17777/62 and 21351/63. Headings B7A and B7V. A vessel, e.g. an amphibious vehicle, comprises one or more hydraulic jet propulsion apparatuses 12, 13, Figs. 2 and 3, not shown, mounted on each side of the vessel. Each apparatus includes a pump 14, intake duct 15 and outlet duct 21 directed substantially rearwardly. A deflector 22 is associated with each outlet duct 21 which can be operated to deflect the thrust for steering and reverse operation. In reverse the jet is deflected through a cascade vane assembly 26 disposed in a wall of the duct 21. Each deflector 22 is controlled separately by levers 32 and 33 through mechanical, hydraulic or electrical linkages 34 and 35. Air is supplied through ports 38 to reduce friction in the outlet duct. A single control system may be used for all steering members. The jet propulsion apparatuses may be mounted outboard.
