Abstract
998,924. Hydraulic jet-propulsion apparatus. DOWTY TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. March 1, 1963 [March 3, 1962], No. 8322/62. Heading B7V. An hydraulic jet-propulsion apparatus for watercraft of the type including a pump, intake and discharge ducts, has openings 43 in the walls of the discharge duct 17b through which air may be admitted, during use of the apparatus, to the interior of the duct for providing an air sleeve surrounding the water passing through the discharge duct (indicated by arrows Fig. 2). The apparatus has a steering duct 24 which can be rotated about an axis 23 by a pulley 35 and vanes 32 through which the water is deflected by a reverse deflector 30 and which, when the apparatus is not submerged, can also admit air. The deflector 30 is operated by an axially movable rod 37 and linkage 39, 40, 41 about an axis 29. A further embodiment describes a submerged duct having holes connected to pipes open to the atmosphere through a non-return valve. Air may be supplied to the duct from a pressure source. The invention may be applied to apparatus without steering or reversing deflectors.
