Abstract
1,182,103. Water jet propulsion for ships and air cushion vehicles. DOWTY ROTOL Ltd 26 Oct., 1967 [14 Nov., 1966], No. 50993/66. Headings B7K and B7V. ' An air cushion vehicle 10 operated over water, hydrofoil or planing watercraft has hydraulic jet-propulsion apparatus 11 comprising a water intake duct 15 loading to a primary pump 13 which delivers water through a duct 16 to a main pump 17 which discharges through a propulsion nozzle 19 Duct 16 6 carries a valve 23 by which flow from pump 13 may be directed solely into a duct 24 leading to a further propulsion nozzle 25, both propulsion nozzles having provision for thrust vectoring or reversing. Pump 17 is smaller than pump 13 and is driven directly by shaft 20 from engine 12 whereas pump 13 is driven at a lower speed through gearing 22 and shaft 21, the relative speeds and diameters being such that the deliveries of the two pumps are substantially the same. For high speed propulsion, nozzle 19 is used but for low speed the flow from pump 13 is diverted by valve 23 to nozzle 25. To enable an air cushion vehicle to operate over land the water intake may be retracted and the vehicle propelled by other means such as propellers or gaseous jets.
