Abstract

1332197 Air cushion vehicles AIR CUSHION VEHICLES Inc 1 Jan 1971 [14 Jan 1970] 67/71 Heading B7K An air cushion vehicle propelled by an air propeller mounted at the front of the vehicle has air-deflecting vanes mounted in the propeller slipstream towards the front and the rear of the vehicle to increase the turning manoeuvrability of the vehicle. The vehicle comprises a base platform 10, preferably of foamed plastics material, which is formed in its undersurface with a cushion plenum chamber and carries at its forward end an aerofoil section ring 13 which encloses an air propeller driven by a power plant 12. Aft of the ring 13 is mounted a structure comprising an upright U-section member having side walls 18, 18<SP>1</SP> which, with a seat 30 forms a cockpit for an operator. Spaced outboard of walls 18, 18<SP>1</SP> are further walls 19, 19<SP>1</SP> to form with top panels 21, 21<SP>1</SP> and the base 10 laterally spaced ducts for the flow of air from the propeller. Immediately aft of the ring 13 are vertically hinged rudders or vanes 14 and at the rear end of the vehicle two banks of vanes 16, 16<SP>1</SP> aligned with the slipstream from the laterally spaced ducts. Control mechanism (Figs. 7, 12 and 14, not shown) associated with a control member 22 in the cockpit is described for operating the vanes 14, 16, 16<SP>1</SP> in unison or differentially to exert a yaw control effect on the vehicle.
