Abstract

1,021,732. Welding by fusion. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Jan. 3, 1963 [Jan. 9, 1962], No. 384/63. Heading B3R. In arc welding in which the electrode is shielded by inner and outer streams of gas the outer stream is subdivided into numerous closely spaced separate streams. The inner and outer streams may be of the same gas, e.g. argon, or different gases. The streams may carry flux particles and the flux in the inner stream may be different from the flux in the outer. A consumable or non-consumable electrode is used. The gas nozzle N, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), of an arc welding head T is surrounded by a rectangular housing 10 enclosing a gas inlet pipe 15 having spaced apertures, diffuser plates 16 of say porous bronze and a grid 12 having rectangular or hexagonal apertures 13. Two layers of superimposed hexagonal grids may be used. The housing 10 directs the outer stream of gas predominantly on the welded portion of the work. The housing 10 has transparent side walls.
