Abstract

852,534. Welding by fusion. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. July 18, 1958 [July 23, 1957], No. 23314/57. Class 83 (4). An auxiliary nozzle arrangement attachable to the gas nozzle of a gas-shielded consumable electrode arc welding head or gun, serves to supply a second and outer layer of shielding gas. The arrangement has a cylindrical portion 29, Fig. 2, attachable to the nozzle 28 of the gun and an outer casing to which gas is supplied from a pipe 34 to pass through diffusing material 40 on a perforated plate 38. A gap 46 in the casing 30 prevents the casing contacting the weld. A cooling water coil 44 surrounds the casing 30. In a modification, the nozzle arrangement consists of a conical or trumpet-shaped portion 50, Fig. 4, fitting on the gas nozzle 28 surrounded by an annular cooling water passage 52. The outer layer of shielding gas issues from a slot or slots 66 communicating with an annular chamber 58 connected to a supply pipe 64. The outer layer of shielding gas may be supplied only to a part including the leading edge of the nozzle periphery. Argon may be used for both layers of shielding gas.
