Abstract

1,021,501. Electromagnetic relays. ELEC. TRICAL THERMOMETER CO. Ltd. Feb. 21, 1962 [Dec. 19, 1960], No. 43651/60. Heading H2B. A tilting relay comprises a beam 8 pivoted between its ends and carrying at least one mercury switch 6, the beam having a counter. weight 18 (Fig. 2, 3, not shown) to bias it to a first position and the beam also carrying a curved armature 9 co-operating with an electro. magnet 14, the armature 9 moving in a plane perpendicular to the magnet axis to bridge polepieces 15, 16, when the electromagnet is energized and thereby tilting beam 8 to a second position and operating the switch 6. Counterweight 18 is adjustable along screw 17 and is carried by a U-shaped bracket 10 which is fixed to beam 8 and pivoted between pivot screws 11 (Fig. 2, not shown). The bracket 10 carries a guide 13 for the leads 4, 5, to the switch contacts. In another embodiment the beam has two stable positions, and two electromagnets co-operate with armatures upon opposite ends of the beam. In another arrangement the beam has two armatures, one at each end, and the electromagnet has its effective poles disposed adjacent the two armatures. The polepieces may be both located upon the same side of the armature or located upon opposite sides of the armature in the first embodiment.
