Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1021001/C2/1> wherein X is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a hydroxy, alkoxy, amino or carbethoxyamino group, and their preparation by reaction of a compound of formula <FORM:1021001/C2/2> wherein X1 is the same as X, other than an amino or carbethoxyamino group, or is a nitro group, with an anhydrous alkali metal acetate in the presence of glacial acetic acid and hydrolysing the acetoxymethyl derivative obtained with water or with an alcoholic alkali, or, where X1 is a nitro group, reducing this to an amino group, with simultaneous hydrolysis of the acetoxy group, and, if desired, converting the amino group to a carbethoxyamino group. 3 - p - Hydroxyphenyl - 5 - chloromethyl-1,2,4 - oxadiazole is prepared by reacting p-hydroxy - benzaldoxime with chloroacetyl chloride to give O - chloroacetyl - p - hydroxybenzaldoxime, followed by heating under reduced pressure. The compounds of the invention have analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic activity and may be used in pharmaceutical compositions in combination with a carrier.
