Abstract

A process for the production of 3,5-dihydrocarbon substituted-4-hydroxy benzoic acids and their esters comprises reacting a 2,6-dihydrocarbon substituted phenol with at least an equimolar quantity of carbon tetrachloride in an alcohol-water solution of an alkali metal hydroxide and in the presence of copper and/or one or more copper compounds and, if desired, saponifying the ester thus obtained. Phenols specified for use as starting materials include 2,6-diethyl-, diisopropyl-, di-tert.-butyl-, di-sec butyl-, 2-tert. butyl-, 6-allyl-, -cyclohexyl and -cyclopentylphenols and 2-phenyl-6-tert. butyl phenol. Copper may be employed in the form of powdered copper or copper salts, such as the sulphate, acetate and/or nitrate. The esters may be hydrolysed by means of alkali metal hydroxides e.g. in aqueous or alcoholic solutions. In examples the preparation is described of 3,5-di-tert. butyl-4-hydroxy benzoic acid and the methyl ester thereof, 3,5-diisopropyl-4-hydroxybenzoic acid methyl ester, 3,5-di-tert. butyl-, diethyl-, di sec. butyl-, diisopropyl-, 3-methyl-5-tert. butyl and 3-tert. butyl-5-cyclo pentyl-and-hexyl-4-hydroxybenzoic acids. The esterification of 3,5-di-tert. butyl -4-hydroxybenzoic acid with propen-(2)-ol-(1) and 2-diethyl-amino ethanol and the use of such esters in pesticidal compositions is described (see Group VI).ALSO:Pesticidal compositions comprise esters of propen - 2 - ol - 1 or 2 - diethylaminoethanol with 3,5 - di - tertbutyl - 4 - hydroxybenzoic acid (see Group IV (b)) as active ingredients together with dimethyl formamide, benzyl-oxydiphenyl-polyglycol ether and water.
