1,262,078. Aryloxyfumaric acids; chromone- 2-carboxylic acids. FISONS PHARMACEUTICALS Ltd. 9 May, 1969 [24 May, 1968], No. 24857/68. Heading C2C. Compounds of the formula wherein R<SP>6</SP> is H or an R group, R is an alkyl group carrying one or more OH groups or a COOH group as substituents, an alkyl or aralkyl group interrupted by one or more O atoms which may, if desired, carry as substituents one or more OH groups, or is a heterocyclic ring containing C and O atoms which may be substituted by one or more OH groups or by one or more alkyl groups; R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are the same or different and each is H, halogen, lower alkyl or a group OR; or R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> together with the adjacent C atoms form a saturated or unsaturated heterocyclic ring containing only C and O atoms; are obtained by reacting a compound of the formula where M is H or an alkali metal cation with an acid of the formula or an ester thereof, where R<SP>12</SP> is halogen and R<SP>13</SP> is H, or R<SP>12</SP> and R<SP>13</SP> together form a C-C bond when R<SP>10</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> together form a C-C bond; or two of R<SP>10</SP>, R<SP>11</SP>, R<SP>12</SP> and R<SP>13</SP> are halogen, and the other two are H; under alkaline conditions, followed by hydrolysis of the product. Examples are given. Also, compounds of the formula or functional derivatives thereof; are obtained by cyclizing compounds of Formula I. Examples are given. 5 - (2 - Ethoxyethoxy) - 2 - ethyl phenol is obtained by reduction of 4-(2-ethoxyethoxy)-2- hydroxy-acetophenone with a Zn amalgam.
