1291865 (Phenylthio)-fumaric acids FISONS PHARMACEUTICALS Ltd 2 Feb 1970 [12 Feb 1969] 13721/72 Divided out of 1291864 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of formula wherein P, Q, R and T are each H, halogen, C 1-10 alkyl, OH, alkoxy, hydroxyalkoxy, alkoxyalkoxy, acetoxy, CO 2 H (or its ester), NH 2 , alkylamino, dialkylamino, alkenyl, C 7-10 aralkyl, Ph, NO 2 , alkenoxy or acyl, or an adjacent pair of P, Q, R, T form a 5- or 6-membered carbocyclic or heterocyclic fused ring and M is H or alkali metal, provided that (i) not all of P, Q, R, T are H; (ii) Q is not Cl when P, R, T are all H; (iii) P is not Me when Q, R are both H and T is MeO. These compounds are prepared by reacting the corresponding thiophenol (or its alkali metal salt) with acetylenedicarboxylic acid, or an ester, or salt thereof, or a monohalofumaric acid or a precursor thereof, under alkaline conditions, and where necessary hydrolysing the resulting product.
