Abstract

1439106 α-Butoxy-isobutyromides FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 20 June 1974 [20 June 1973] 27508/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division G2] Compounds of the formula where Q is a coupler residue; R<SP>1</SP> is alkyl, aralkyl, alkoxy, alkoxyalkyl, acylamino or alkoxycarbonyl each having 4-20 C; R<SP>2</SP> is Cl, OH, or 1-5 C alkyl or alkoxy; or R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> together form a non-metallic 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic or carbocyclic ring; n is 1-4; and m is 0 or 1-4 are prepared by reacting an α-(substituted phenoxy)-isobutyric acid chloride with a coupler residue containing an amino group. The compounds are colour couplers which are used in photographic silver halide emulsions. α - (3 - n - Pentadecylphenoxy)isobutyric acid chloride is prepared by treating the corresponding acid with thionyl chloride in the presence of dimethylformamide in benzene or by heating the corresponding acid in acetonitrile and ethylene chloride. α-(4-Tert-amylphenoxy)isobutyric acid chloride is prepared similarly. Phenoxybutyric acids of the Formula (IV) where R<SP>1</SP> is a group having 4-20 carbon atoms selected from alkyl, aralkyl, alkoxy, alkoxyalkyl, acylamino or alkoxycarbonyl; R<SP>2</SP> is Cl, OH, C 1 -C 5 alkyl or C 1 -C 5 alkoxy, or R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> together form a 5- to 6-membered carbocyclic ring; n is 1-4 and m is 0,or 1-4, which are stated to be novel, are made by reacting the appropriate phenol with acetone and chloroform in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide and neutralizing the resulting alkali metal carboxylate.
