Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:1009793/C2/1> wherein X is a chlorine or bromine atom and Ac is an acetyl group. The compounds may be prepared by reacting a 5-chloro- or 5-bromo-21-deoxy-uridine with an acetylating agent such as acetic anhydride. Examples are given. The above compounds show antiviral activity, particularly towards certain dermotropic viruses. For topical applications the compounds are preferably used in the form of solutions in water buffered at a pH of about 7, or incorporated in ointments prepared from the usual ingredients.
