The invention comprises compounds of formulµ The tricarboxylic acid of formula given above may be prepared by oxidizing 3,4,4<SP>1</SP>-trimethylbenzophenone with nitric acid at elevated temperature. The anhydride of the formula given above may be prepared by partially dehydrating the tricarboxylic acid by heating and thereafter reacting with an anhydride, e.g. acetic anhydride, or other dehydrating agent, e.g. acetyl chloride, capable of completing the removal of one molecule of water from the acid. The 3,4,4<SP>1</SP>-trimethylbenzophenone used as starting material is prepared by reacting o-xylene with p-toluyl chloride in the presence of aluminium chloride.
