A foundation garment comprises front panel 1 (Fig. 1, not shown), side panels 2 and 3 having transversely stretchable triangular elastic gussets and a back panel 4 made in two parts, an upper part 27 and a lower part 28, the lower part overlapping the upper part. Upper part 27 comprises three non-stretchable sections 29, 30 and 31, sections 29 and 31 being stitched by seams 34 and 35 to side panels 2, 3 respectively. Lower part 28 comprises a non- stretchable central section 36, and two lateral transversely stretchable sections 37, 38, stitched along seams 34, 35 to side panels 2, 3 respectively. Stiffening material (metal or plastic strips) is enclosed in seams 32, 33, 34 and 35. Back stocking suspenders consists of elastic portion 41 attached to the lower edge of the upper part of the back panel (Fig. 3, not shown) and to the lower edge of the back part of the side panels at 44. Suspender clip 42 slides freely on the elastic portion. The two parts 13, 14 of the front panel are laced down the front, part 14 being secured to side panel 3 by hooks 10, a strip 26 of soft material being provided on side panel 3 under the eyes 11. A cover piece 19 is provided inside the front panel 1. Four suspenders are provided on the front. The construction of the back panel allows the lower part to move independently of the upper part when the wearer assumes a sitting position.
