A foundation garment for women comprises two superposed sections or layers 1, 2 of two way stretch elastic material extending from the waist 9 to below a wearer's hips, the outer layer 2 extending substantially throughout the garment, the inner layer 1 having an area 5 cut out of the front at the central bottom thereof and extending upwardly towards the crotch, an area 6 cut from the upper back portion and extending up to the waist line, and an area 7 cut out of the lower central back arid extending down to the bottom of the garment, the layers being stitched together at the back and front along vertical seams 3, 4. The layers are also stitched together along curved lines 13 and 14 and along the edges of the cut portions 5, 6 and 7, and at the waistband 9. Hose suspenders 12 are attached to elastic facing 10, and legs may be formed, figs 6-8 (not shown), by sewing a crotch piece (18) of soft inelastic material to the edges of a cut out 8 in layer 2 and to the edges of a further cut out in the back central portion of outer layer 1. Longer legs, Figs. 9-10 (not shown) may be provided by extending layers 1, 2 downwardly. The garment may be a girdle or panty girdle, and the material used may be a sheer, fine gauge elastic powernet.
