A variable auto-transformer has its winding formed from a single length of wire wound on core 15 (Fig. 1) in a series of advancing whorls, each whorl having at least an inner turn 24 (Fig. 5) and an outer turn 25, a contact surface for the brush 14 being formed on the outer turns and the turns in the outer layer being as closely spaced as the turns in the inner layer at least at the bush contact surfaces. There may be three layers of turns (Fig. 6, not shown). Annular end caps 16 on the wound strip core 15 may have ridges thereon (Fig. 2, not shown) to hold the inner turns in place. The brush may operate on a track on the cylindrical outer surface of the windings. If the core is annular the turns may be bunched together on its inner side.
