Abstract

1,019,688. Thermionic cathodes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Oct. 9, 1964, No. 41281/64. Heading H1D. During manufacture of a thermionic cathode comprising a matrix in the form of a sintered coating of nickel powder impregnated with alkaline earth emissive material, activator metal, e.g. V, Cr, Mn or W, is introduced into the matrix by impregnating the matrix with a solution of a compound of the activator metal. In particular, a nickel cathode sleeve may be sprayed with a suspension of carbonyl nickel of particle size about 3 microns in a solution of nitrocellulose in ethyl carbonate, and fired in wet hydrogen at 950‹ C. for 15 mins. to form a matrix about 0À003 inch thick and having about 70% by volume of pores. The matrix is then impregnated with an aqueous solution of ammonium tungstate and dried at 100‹ C., this step being repeated 4 times to provide a tungsten content of 1 to 10% by weight of nickel in the matrix. The tungstate is reduced to tungsten by stoving in dry hydrogen at 1000‹ C. for 20 mins. Finally, an equimolar triple carbonate, suspended in methylated spirits, is applied by brushing, and the cathode is lacquered with nitrocellulose prior to its assembly into a valve and activation.
