1,034,107. Thermionic cathodes. THORNAEI RADIO VALVES & TUBES Ltd. July 9, 1963 [Aug. 3, 1962], No. 30009/62. Heading H1D. In a method of making emissive cathode material suitable for formation into cathode structures, an alkaline earth material is applied to a sintered layer of metal powder on a metal substrate, and thereafter subjected to pressure to consolidate the layer of sintered metal and alkaline earth material and reduce its thickness from an initial value of about 50Á to a value in the range 12-25 Á. In particular, a strip of cathode nickel alloy may be coated with a suspension of carbonyl nickel powder, 2-3 Á particle size, in an organic binder, e.g. nitrocellulose or methyl methacrylate, by spraying, brushing &c., or electrophoresis. After sintering at 800-1000‹ C. in a hydrogen-containing atmosphere, this layer is impregnated with a co-precipitated alkaline earth carbonate mixture comprising, by weight, 55% barium, 41% strontium, and 4% calcium carbonate, suspended in a solution of nitrocellulose. After drying, the impregnated layer is compacted between rollers. A specific example is given. The coated strip is used to form cathodes for thermionic valves, the organic binder being driven off, and the carbonates converted to oxides, during valve processing.
